Cochlear implants (CI) are what most people call the “bionic ear”

These are done for a few groups of patients: 

1. Pre-lingual deafened children: children who are born deaf or affected by meningitis in early childhood / infancy and have not yet developed speech.

2. Post-lingual deafened adults and children: these are patients who had hearing and developed speech but subsequently lost their hearing as a result of inner ear trauma, infection or disease.

These patients are severely or profoundly deafened, and get limited or no help from properly fitted optimal hearing aids. 

There are now several CI companies eg COCHLEAR, Advanced Bionics Corporation and MED EL, which provide high quality devices with an established track record. You can find their links on my website.
